The performance of APAM in flocculation depends on two primary molecular mechanisms: charge neutralization and bridging flocs. The charge density (hydrolysis degree, typically ranging from 10% to 60%) dictates how effectively the polymer chain interacts with the electrostatic double layers of suspended particles. The molecular weight (ranging from 5 Million to upwards of 25 Million Daltons) determines the physical length of the polymer chain.
High-molecular-weight APAM chains stretch out in aqueous solutions due to the electrostatic repulsion between the negative carboxylate groups along the carbon backbone. When this chain touches the boundary layer of inorganic particles, it forms multiple physical adsorption sites. This creates giant macro-flocs through "bridging" which rapidly precipitate under gravity, increasing dewatering rates and filtrate clarity.
