The correct charge density depends on the surface charge of the organic solids in your wastewater. Sludge with high organic content (e.g., biological sludge) requires higher cationic charge densities (typically 40% to 60%). We recommend running a standard jar test using varying charge densities to identify the optimum floc size and supernatant clarity.
Dry powder Polyacrylamide has a shelf life of approximately 24 months when stored in a cool, dry warehouse in its original packaging. Liquid emulsion PAM is more sensitive to temperature variations and typically has a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. It requires mild agitation before use if stored for extended periods.
Dry PAM should be diluted to a concentration of 0.1% to 0.5% using a clean water supply. The powder should be dispersed slowly into the water under constant mechanical agitation (approx. 200–400 RPM) to prevent the formation of gel aggregates, often referred to as "fish-eyes." The solution should age for 50–60 minutes to ensure the polymer chains fully dissolve before application.
APAM works effectively across a pH range of 6.0 to 10.0. In highly acidic environments (pH below 5.0), the carboxyl groups on the anionic polymer chain lose their negative charge due to protonation. This causes the polymer chain to coil, reducing its capacity for bridging and flocculation.
