Standard alum is highly sensitive to water temperature and pH fluctuations, often requiring added alkali chemicals to maintain the target precipitation range. In the Middle East, where raw water temperatures can exceed 35°C and exhibit high alkalinity, alum hydrolyzes too quickly, resulting in weak flocs and high residual aluminum. PAC is pre-hydrolyzed, meaning it works effectively across a wide pH range (5.0 to 9.0) and temperature envelope. It builds larger, denser flocs, requires lower dosages, and produces significantly less chemical sludge.
Basicity represents the ratio of hydroxyl groups to aluminum ions in the polymer structure. High basicity polymers (such as ACH or high-basicity PAC) contain more highly charged polymeric aluminum molecules (like Al13 and Al30). These species provide superior charge neutralization capacity compared to low-basicity alternatives.
